Telegraph Hill

Telegraph Hill

Telegraph Hill is home to the famous Coit Tower, one of the City’s most recognizable landmarks, which rises 210 feet. Built in 1933 with a bequest from the infamous Lillie Hitchcock Coit, it affords majestic views all across the bay. The hill was originally called Loma Alta (“High Hill”) by the Spaniards, followed by Goat Hill, and then arrived at its current moniker in 1862. The Filbert Steps are well-known for the gardens that flow down to Levi Plaza. Telegraph Hill, while mostly a residential neighborhood, is adjacent to North Beach’s bustling nightlife. Today, Telegraph Hill is also famous for its flock of feral parrots, descendents from escaped or released pets, and the topic of a 2003 book and subsequent documentary entitled The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.
